In March 1995, the very first online lotto was held in the Philippines and since then thousands have bet and thousands have also won.

But in the past year, more news of people winning the jackpot have prompted a Senate investigation on whether the game of chance was really still won by chance.

Since that year however, the number of jackpot winners have declined until 2017.

There were 68 winners in 2014 and 61 in 2015.

There were 52 winners in 2016, before the number bounced back to 69 in 2017.

The winner count went down again across the five lotto games to 61 in 2018 and 47 in 2019.

In 2020, the tally dropped to 21 after the initial months of the pandemic halted lotto draws.

In 2023, the number of jackpot winners across five lotto games declined to 85 people, but remained on a decade-high for 6/42 and 6/45 game.

In March 1995, the very first online lotto was held in the Philippines and since then thousands have bet and thousands have also won.

But in the past year, succeding news of players winning the jackpot has prompted a Senate investigation on whether the game of chance was really still won by chance.

There are currently five main lotto games, but in 2012, there were only four.

That year, there were 47 jackpot winners in 6/42 lotto and 58 in 6/45 lotto. Both games require bettors to correctly pick six numbers from 0 to 42 or 45, respectively, to win the top prize.

There was a record number of 438 jackpot winners of the 6/55 lotto in 2022. That first raised questions about the credibility of the game.

For all five games, there were 506 winners.

In 2023, the number of jackpot winners across five lotto games declined to 85 people, but remained on a decade-high for 6/42 and 6/45 game.

As the number of winners rose, so did the amount of accumulated prizes. In 2022, cumulative jackpot prizes received by winners of the five lotto games hit P3.9 billion, the highest since at least 2010, data from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), which regulates lotto, showed. That was the year over 400 individuals won at the same time in a single draw of 6/55 lotto. When multiple players win the jackpot in a draw, winners divide the pot money equally.
Jackpot prizes won eased last year to just over P3.4 billion, although that amount was one of the highest over the past decade, PCSO data showed.

The increase in the number of lotto winners prompted the Senate to open a legislative inquiry into the matter. PCSO, for its part, denied lotto results have been or can be manipulated.
